Season underway after day one in Glenelg
The 2024/25 Australian Beach Volleyball Tour is off and running with the opening day taking place in ever-changing conditions at Adelaide’s Glenelg Beach.
Morning rain and high winds played havoc early in the day before the clouds parted and conditions eased on a day which saw 96 matches played over around eight hours of competition.
The women’s draw saw the upsets fly in Pool A with 17th-seeds Rebecca Ingram and Matisse Conlon (QLD) finishing the day undefeated including a victory over top-ranked South Australian combination Bailee Kendall and Leilani Burnell. The No.1 seeds will now need to come from the round of 32 on Saturday if they are to progress to the business end of the tournament.
The rest of the women’s competition largely went to form on day one, seeing seven of the top nine seeds make their way into the Round of 16.
Six of the top eight men’s teams came through the opening day unscathed, with the form matching the pre-event rankings across all but two of the eight pools.
On Saturday, the third and fourth placed teams in each pool play sudden death matches in the Round of 32.
The winners progress to the Round of 24 against the teams which finished second in their pool where they will play for a place in the Round of 16.
Day two of the tournament starts with the first matches of the Challenger Division at 8am ACDT while the Elimination Phase the Elite draws starts at 8:50am ACDT with the Rounds of 32.
