Glenelg hosts opening leg of 2024/25 Australian Beach Volleyball Tour

The Australian Beach Volleyball Tour returns to Glenelg Beach in Adelaide for the first time since 2021 with three days of action starting on Friday at 11am ACDT.

On that occasion, Adelaide’s Chris McHugh teamed with Damian Schumann to take out the men’s draw and the 35-year-old is back at the event he first took out in 2013.

McHugh will partner Perth Steel Mahindra Super League captain Daniel Piggott who scored two quarter-final appearances last year with Jed Walker (WA) and Garang Anyang (VIC).

McHugh and Piggott enter the draw as third seeds, with South Australia’s Solomon Bushby and Ben Hood (QLD) the top-ranked team going into the tournament. Victorian’s Anyang and Justin Schumann are third seeds with the experienced pairing of Rob Reeves (QLD) and Matt Abela (VIC) rounding out the top four seeds.

The women’s draw sees the SA pairing of Leilani Burnell and Bailee Kendall as the top seeds just ahead of Victoria’s USA-Czech pairing Anna Donlan and Lucie Sauerova; ironically, that pair were on opposite sides of the net when they played each other for bronze earlier this year in Cobram.

South Australia’s Ruby Vanloo teams with Lauren Brasell (QLD) as third seeds with fourth seeds Tarryn Angermeier (USA/VIC) and Genel Sturgeon (USA/VIC) playing their eleventh national tour event together.

Thirty-two teams will play in both the Elite men’s and women’s draws on Friday. The eight pool winners will progress straight to the round of 16. The third and fourth placed teams in each pool will play off on Saturday morning for a place in the round of 24 against the teams which finished second in their pool.

Quarter-final winners on Saturday afternoon will proceed to the medal rounds on Sunday.
